Fun for the whole family! Wiener Dog Racing, plus German-style Food and Beer, headline this years popular event. This 14th annual event will begin at noon with a cannon blast, tapping of the keg, and polka music by the Jim Busta Band. Main attractions will be the wiener dog races, polka music and dancing lessons, non-stop live music, and games for adults and children. There’s something for everyone at Galena Oktoberfest. The wiener dog races will follow the raising of the flag by the Galena Fire Department and the singing of the national anthem. There will be a wiener dog parade and costume contest, plus the auctioning off of the original, framed 2021 artwork. Simultaneously, the big tent will feature plenty of seating with polka music, dance floor, and polka dancing lessons, in addition to three food vendors and Galena Oktoberfest merchandise sales. Children will enjoy the bounce house, as well as pumpkin painting and other art related activities. Live music for the day will be provided by the Jim Busta Band from Spring Grove, Minnesota, The Goodtime Dutchmen of Kewaskum, Wisconsin, George Albright and Heinz Mattmann, AKA the New Glarus Alphorners, and the Resistors, a local blues-based rock band. With many years of experience, Tim and Kathy Westemeyer will teach polka dancing lessons. The Potosi Rolling Bar will be featured once again parked near the dog track. Close by, New Earth Animals will be selling dog treats and toys, and Safe Haven, the local humane society, will provide several dogs available for adoption. Later in the day, there will be tournaments for adults. Sign up for the Beer Stein Endurance Contest and try your hand at keeping the elbow straight while holding the 16-ounce stein. Following both the men’s and women’s contests, there will be a Bean Bag Tournament for the registered teams. Hosted by the Galena Lions Club, all proceeds from this event will go back to the community to serve those in need. Pre-registration is required for Wiener Dog Races and Bean Bag Tournament. *Wagons, wheelchairs, walkers, and all leashed, friendly dogs are welcome.
